Three ways to protect your family — pick what fits.

Life insurance isn't one product. Here's the plain-language version of what's actually available, so you can compare apples to apples before you talk pricing.

01 10–30 year terms

Term life insurance

The most affordable way to cover your biggest years of financial risk — the mortgage, young kids, income replacement. Coverage locks in for a set term (10, 20, or 30 years) at a fixed premium, then expires unless renewed or converted.

From ~$20–$60/mo for $500K, age 34
02 Lasts your whole life

Permanent life insurance

Whole life and universal life policies never expire and build cash value you can borrow against later. Premiums cost more than term, but they're locked in for life and the payout is guaranteed no matter when you pass away.

Best for estate planning & lifetime needs
03 No medical exam

No-medical life insurance

Simplified-issue and guaranteed-issue policies ask few or no health questions and skip the exam entirely — built for older applicants or anyone with a pre-existing condition who's been declined elsewhere.

Rule of thumb

Most advisors suggest 10–15× your annual income.

That's a sensible starting point, and in much of Canada it holds up. In the GTA it often doesn't — when a mortgage runs ten or twelve times a household's annual income on its own, a multiple of income understates what a family would actually need. The calculator below starts from what you'd owe instead.

Life insurance FAQ

Common questions about life insurance

How much life insurance do I actually need?−
Most advisors recommend 10–15 times your annual income as a starting point. That's usually enough to clear the mortgage, replace a decade or more of income, and cover your kids' education if something happened to you. Your advisor will help you land on an exact number based on your debts, dependents, and existing coverage, or you can run your own figures through our life insurance calculator.
Do I need a medical exam to get life insurance?+
It depends on the policy. Fully underwritten term and permanent policies usually require a quick paramedical exam or health questionnaire. Simplified-issue and guaranteed-issue no-medical policies skip the exam entirely, often in exchange for a lower coverage amount or higher premium.
What's the difference between term and permanent life insurance?+
Term life insurance covers you for a fixed period, usually 10 to 30 years, at the lowest cost. Permanent life insurance (whole life or universal life) never expires and builds cash value you can borrow against, but costs significantly more.
Can I convert my term policy to permanent life insurance later?+
Many term policies include a conversion privilege that lets you switch some or all of your coverage to a permanent policy without a new medical exam, usually before a set age or before the term ends. Not every policy includes this, so it's worth confirming before you buy.
Is a life insurance payout taxable in Canada?+
No. Life insurance death benefits are generally paid out to your named beneficiaries completely tax-free in Canada.
What happens if I miss a premium payment?+
Insurers typically provide a grace period, often 30 days, before a policy lapses for non-payment. If it does lapse, reinstatement is sometimes possible but may require new health evidence, so it's best to contact your advisor as soon as a payment is missed.
