Summer Adventures & ER Visits: What OHIP Covers (and What It Doesn’t)

Summer Adventures & ER Visits: What OHIP Covers (and What It Doesn’t)

Summer in Ontario means road trips, lake days, and spontaneous adventures. But sometimes, fun comes with an unexpected detour – a slip at the dock, a twisted ankle on a hike, or a sudden fever on a cottage weekend.

Before you pack the car or grab your paddleboard, here’s a real-world guide to what OHIP actually covers – and where you’re on your own.

✅ What OHIP Covers Within Ontario

If you need emergency medical care at an Ontario hospital or ER, OHIP generally covers:

  • Doctor visits and ER assessments

  • Medically necessary procedures

  • Hospital stays in standard wards

But remember: ambulance rides often come with a fee (around $45 for Ontario residents) unless you’re admitted.

🟡 Traveling Within Canada? Limited Coverage

OHIP covers emergency care in other provinces and territories, but not everything:

  • Doctors and hospitals outside Ontario may bill more than OHIP pays.

  • Ambulance, airlift, or private clinic fees might be out-of-pocket.

Tip: Bring your Ontario health card and keep receipts – some costs can be reimbursed, but not all.

🔴 Cross-Border Trips: You’re Mostly Uncovered

If you head to the U.S. for a day trip or vacation, OHIP will only cover a small portion of emergency care – often just the Ontario rate. A U.S. ER visit can easily top $5,000–$10,000, and an air ambulance back to Canada could cost $30,000+.

Solution: Even a basic travel medical insurance policy (we can help you with that) can save you from financial disaster.

📌 Bottom Line for Ontario Adventurers

OHIP is strong for local emergencies, modest for Canadian travel, and almost nonexistent for U.S. or international trips.

If summer plans take you beyond your neighbourhood, a quick check on travel medical coverage – through work, a credit card, or a low-cost standalone plan – can turn a potential financial nightmare into a minor inconvenience.
